A partner category groups partner types by the kind of value the partner adds to the business: product value, revenue, awareness, or operations. It is the top level of the PartnerStandard taxonomy. Four categories cover the field: Product, Channel, Marketing, and Service.

The Four Categories

  • Product Partner: enhances the product through co-development, feature or data integration. The partner's work speeds the roadmap and adds core value to what the customer buys.
  • Channel Partner: drives revenue by promoting, reselling, or distributing the product. The partner expands market reach and sales capacity.
  • Marketing Partner: builds awareness, education, and lead generation through content, campaigns, or events.
  • Service Partner (also called Operations Partner): delivers or supports operational functions such as deployment, integration work, IT, or customer support.

How to Tell Categories Apart

Ask what the partner fundamentally contributes. Does the partnership make the product better? Product. Does it sell the product? Channel. Does it make the market aware of the product? Marketing. Does it run or support operations around the product? Service.

The category describes the value exchange, not the company. One partner company can play in several categories at once: a systems integrator might resell your product (Channel), build an integration on top of it (Product), and run deployments for shared customers (Service). Each of those is a separate value exchange, and each gets categorized on its own. Classifying the company instead of the exchange is the most common way taxonomies break down.

Category vs Type

The category is the value bucket; the partner type is the specific operating model inside it. Channel is a category; Reseller, Distributor, and Referral Partner are types within it, each with different mechanics for who invoices the customer and how the partner is paid. Seventeen types sit under the four categories. When you design a partner program, the category tells you what value you are trading; the type tells you how the relationship operates day to day.
